First, a few facts about the island. Corsica is a French island in the Mediterranean Sea, located 180 km southeast of the French city of Nice. The island has an area of 8680 km² and its capital is Ajaccio, also the birthplace of the French general Napoleon. The island is famous for its beautiful sunsets. In the evening, the sun sinks into the sea and reflects the red-orange light in the rippling water. A pink glow falls over the red rock formations. A beautiful image. For early risers, the sunrise is also worth experiencing.

But what the French island is really known for are the red rocks. Before we left, these rocks were at the top of our must-see list, and we soon found out that this was more than justified. The volcanic rock formations have a red terracotta color and rise high from the sea. The sunlight gives the rocks a deep color, creating beautiful contrasts. An impressive image that is typical of Corsica. It is not for nothing that the rock formations are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Winding roads lead you between the rock formations, and you really feel part of the natural beauty around you.

The routes along the coast offer a completely different experience. First, of course, the view of the azure sea that you can enjoy during a bike ride along the coast of Corsica. But where there is sea, there is often wind. So, you will certainly have to deal with this if you choose this route. In addition, the coast is very popular among tourists, and is a lot busier than inland. So, that is also something to consider. Nevertheless, a route along the coast is a must-do if you are a cyclist and going to explore Corsica. The route along the coast between Calvi and Porto is recommended. Read more about the route at the bottom of this page.

For the true cycling enthusiast, Corsica is a dream destination. Many hills and mountains and few flat roads. The highest points of the French island are at about 2700 meters altitude. While climbing and descending, you can enjoy the surrounding nature. Because that is Corsica: nature. Corsica is with over 300,000 inhabitants, of which about one third live in the two largest cities, a sparsely populated island. Although there may not be very many villages and towns on Corsica compared to other regions, the ones you do encounter are very cozy. Get fresh fruit in one of the local stores or have a delicious cup of coffee or a nice drink on the terrace.

The coast of the island of Corsica is beautiful, and especially the west coast is breathtakingly beautiful, and because of the mountainous landscape also very popular among cyclists. From the village of Calvi in the northwest of Corsica towards the bay of Porto, there is a beautiful route which you can cycle to enjoy magnificent views of the sea. The route is not only stunningly beautiful, but also challenging, and a good cycling condition is a must if you want to do this route. The winding route runs through the Corsican mountains, and there are hardly any flat stretches. Moreover, you will encounter few villages and stores along the way, so make sure you have enough food and drink with you. All the effort is definitely worth it, because along the way you will be treated to the most beautiful views of the varied landscape of the island.

Route Calvi - Porto

The route along the west coast begins in the town of Calvi, a picturesque town with a pleasant harbor. Calvi is the capital of the region Balagne, also called the garden of Corsica. This nickname says enough about the beautiful, green and fertile environment of this area. In Calvi you can do your last shopping for the road. The first part of the route runs along the coast and then continues into the mountainous interior. The last part of the route runs along the coast again with views of the Gulf of Porto, a beautiful bay at the port town of the same name. This small idyllic village located on the west coast is the end point of the route.
