GO SOLO

You can determine the route yourself.

Perhaps you have a favorite route, or you feel like exploring a new area. When you cycle alone, there is no one to hold you back from choosing your own route. You can go wherever you want. It's wonderful! If you feel like turning right, then turn right. If you feel like turning left, then turn left. You don't have to consider anyone else, except your own desires.

Cycling in the morning, afternoon, or evening? It's up to you.

If you decide to go cycling alone, you can not only determine the route yourself, but also choose when to go cycling. Maybe you're not a morning person or you have to work all day. Then you can enjoy a beautiful evening ride. Or perhaps you want to start the day sportily and take an early morning ride. It's up to you.

A solo ride is the perfect moment to clear your mind.

When you cycle alone, you don't have to think about anything. You can let go of everything and completely immerse yourself in the environment. You're not distracted by anyone, and can simply enjoy the moment.

You determine the pace.

There is no one telling you to go faster or slower when you cycle alone. You determine the pace. You don't have to hold back, and you won't quickly exceed your own limits. A solo ride is the perfect opportunity to set a new personal record or simply enjoy a completely relaxed ride.

The route always fits perfectly into your training schedule.

Sometimes, you may want to train, but your cycling buddy is not feeling well, can't keep up with you, or is not at your level. Of course, that doesn't have to be a problem, but when you cycle alone, you don't have to worry about it. The route you cycle always fits perfectly into your training schedule. You always win.

Tips van Eva om alleen te fietsen

Eva Boer:

"What's so great about cycling solo, you may ask? For some cyclists, a ride is a moment to catch up with a friend or challenge each other physically. But just imagine: you and your bike, alone in nature, birds chirping around you, inhaling, and exhaling. Is there anything better than cycling solo? That's why we've listed some benefits and things to keep in mind when you hit the road alone:

The benefits of cycling alone.

What I love about a solo bike ride is that you see so many beautiful things. When you're not having a conversation, your attention is solely focused on your bike and the scenery. This allows you to notice many more things, and you really have an eye for your surroundings. Moments like these can make you fall even more in love with biking in nature. I can't get enough of it :)

Another thing I really enjoy is the silence, which is hard to come by these days. But when you're alone on your bike, your mind becomes completely empty - no stimuli, no appointments, nothing to do. Just the movement of your legs and the sound of the wind rushing past your ears. It's a true 'solo bike reset'. And when you're completely still, and your bike doesn't make a sound, you have a better chance of seeing a deer or a fox in the woods!

You're also flexible, and there's more room for spontaneity. If you're cycling somewhere and you decide to add a loop, or you see a new single track, you can give in to that curiosity. I once cycled through the woods with someone when I also saw a nice path. It just took a while before we realized that this path was too far off the route, resulting in us having to find our way back home through the woods in the dark. (Note to self: not really smart). Know what you're dragging someone into.

What to watch out for when cycling alone?

This brings me to the things to watch out for when cycling alone. As a solo cyclist, you are more vulnerable to disaster scenarios. Yes, I know, that sounds extreme and it often isn't that bad. Yet, it is important for anyone who cycles alone to be aware of the potential risks.

For example, getting a flat tire, to becoming hypothermic on a long winter ride that you underestimated. Who are your emergency contacts in such cases? And how can you solve these problems yourself? Make sure you are confident and well-prepared, with knowledge of how to fix your own flat tire and enough food and drinks.

If you like, you can always share your location through an app or wear visible ICE contact information on yourself or on your bike. Lights are also crucial when cycling alone in the dark, as solo cyclists are unfortunately more easily overlooked. Of course, being 100% prepared all the time is impossible, but we can see it as part of the adventure ;)."
