Großgloncker Hochalpenstraße -

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is one of the most famous roads, or perhaps THE most famous road in Austria. The road runs along the Großglockner. And those who go to Austria should definitely not miss a visit to the Großglockner. With a height of 3798 kilometers, the highest mountain in Austria is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. And as far as we are concerned, that is more than justified! The route along this mountain is also popular with cycling enthusiasts. The winding mountain road has no less than 36 (!) hairpin bends. The bends are numbered, so you can estimate how far it is to the top. That way we also knew approximately how high up we were, so we could adjust our cycling clothes accordingly. One of the things that makes the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße special is that you cross different climate zones along the way because of the huge difference in altitude. Down in the valley it can certainly be nice and warm in summer, while at the top of the mountain it is quite cold.

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is popular among avid cyclists, with the Edelweißspitze as the literal highlight. The Edelweißspitze is the highest point of the route and offers stunning views of the Alps. The road to the top is 1.5 kilometers long. That sounds short but make no mistake! It is a challenging climbing route with a maximum gradient of up to 14%. As if this challenge is not big enough, the road has no less than 7 hairpin bends and a road surface of cobblestones. So, this route is for the real diehards, but once you reach the top, all your efforts are rewarded. The top offers at 2571 km altitude, a phenomenal panoramic view over the Austrian Alps area. All soreness and muscle pain are forgotten in one fell swoop when you reach the top of the Edelweißspitze and are overwhelmed by the overwhelming beauty of the surrounding view.

Ötztaler Gletscherstraße -

The Ötztaler Gletscherstraße is a breathtaking route to the highest viewpoint in Austria, which lies at an altitude of 2830 meters. Not only are the views and the landscape breathtaking, but with an average gradient of 10.5%, the route can also be called breathtaking from a sporting perspective. The challenging route starts in the village of Sölden and leads through one of the most challenging ski areas, Rettenbach to the glacier areas in Öztal. Before you get there, you first cycle through the Rosi-Mittermeier-Tunnel, the highest tunnel in the Alps. If you cycle this route in the summer months, the icy glaciers form a surreal and impressive picture. It is important to think carefully about your cycling clothes before cycling this route. In the summer it is nice and warm down in the valley, but up on the mountain the temperature is around freezing.
